Victory Day 9 May

Ninth of May is a special day for Russians. Oh, no, not only for Russians, but also for people who live in ex-Soviet countries. They call this day as a Victory Day. This day marks Germany’s surrender to the Soviet Union in 1945, ending one of the bloodiest wars history in Russia. Approximately 25 million of citizens dead in this fighting.

Since 1965 this day is declared as a major holiday (but why not since 1946). On this day, many people will celebrate it by attend the parade on the street. Almost all the cities in Russia celebrate this day and make parade, but one of the biggest celebration is in Moscow, and I’ve been there to watch yeahhh. There will be so many interesting things you can see on the street when Victory Day. Not only a parade, but also many spot which decorated like a battlefield and we can wear the soldier costume and take picture there. We also can try to assemble weapons, and those are real weapons!

There are also some traditions that people do on this day, they will give flowers to the veterans they meet on the street, or they just go to the memorial place like monuments or statue and put the flowers there. Many people will wear a special hat (like a soldier hat) with a star pin and communism symbol on it. Also some flags, or uniforms.

This celebration usually last from 9 am to 2 pm, on that moment the street will full of people. Then people come home, and then they will come back again around 10 pm because it will be a fireworks party at city landmarks. This fireworks will last up to 15 minutes.

Lucky for me because since I live in Russia, I watched the celebrations in two different cities, Tyumen and Moscow. Both are awesome, but of course in Moscow it was merrier than in Tyumen. I watched the parade of airplanes near the Red Square. It was totally cool.

For me as a foreigner, this moment is worth to watch, I can take many cool photos and videos, and also know more things. But for some Russians (which I talked to), this celebration is useless. They think that the money which spend on this celebration is better to give it to the veterans or their families.

Here are some of my photos on Victory Day in Tyumen:
